David Welper on Saying “I Love You Very Much” 10 Times

An interview with David Welper, from The Write Stuff series over at SF Weekly:

David Welper has an MA from Wayne State University in Detroit. His work appears in Housefire, Denver Syntax, Louffa Press and more. He has been a featured reader in NYC where he lived for a couple years. He has also lived in Denver, but now lives in the Bay Area where he’s keepin’ it real, paying the bills by working as a Psych Nurse. His book of poems, Lookbaby, is available on his website as well as Kobo.com, Pegasus Books, McNally Jackson… so go get it!

If someone said I want to do what you do, what advice would you have for them?

Read a wide variety of genres and subjects, experiment, meet people and learn from people, take classes, listen, pay attention to life, keep submitting your work, never stop!

What’s wrong with society today?

Being absorbed by technology, which is hindering our ability to communicate in person.

What is your fondest memory?

I have lots… completing three college degrees, going to NYC for the first time, my childhood, buying a home, living in NYC (though it drove me nuts).

What are you working on right now?

Starting a business called phoTeedle. Keep watching for more to come. Tee-shirts and other stuff.

If there were one thing about the Bay Area that you would change, what would it be?

Better public transportation (I’m so used to using subways in NYC).

A night on the town: what does that mean to you?

Drinks, a lover, romance, good food, good music, fun, sex, people watching.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen?

I work as a Psych Nurse, so this could take a long time to answer…. I’ll pass on this one.

What can you do with 50 words? 50 dollars?

Tell somebody “I love you very much” ten times. Enjoy a good meal.

If you got an all expenses paid life experience of your choice, what would it be?

Travel the world for a year.
