It’s one of our American ironies: our culture values older women less, just as they come into the fullness of experience and wisdom. Women “of a certain age” have greater self-acceptance; the losses they’ve lived can give them deeper appreciation of each day’s gifts. But the passage of time offers no escape from the misogyny every woman wades through daily. And that’s compounded by a new barrier: ageism.

In her new book Women Rowing North, Mary Pipher probes the world of aging women with insight and compassion— just as she did the struggles of adolescent girls in her landmark bestseller, Reviving Ophelia. Pipher explores how women can build resilience against both new and lingering challenges. “If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully,” she writes, “we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent.”
