Meet author Gabriela Alemán in conversation with translator Dick Cluster

September 6, 2018 @ 6:00 am - 7:00 pm UTC+0

Meet Gabriela Alemán, celebrated Ecuadorian writer and author of the novel Poso Wells. Among other honors, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and was recognized by Bogotá 39, a 2007 list of the most important up-and-coming Latin American writers. Poso Wells is her first full-length work published in English. It’s a madcap, feminist mash-up of noir, thriller, Science Fiction and satire, and has been featured in The Paris ReviewThe New Yorker, and the Los Angeles Times Review of Books, and was selected as one of the American Booksellers Association’s Independent Booksellers’ 10 Debut Picks of the Season. “One part Thomas Pynchon, one part Gabriel García Marquez, and one part Raymond Chandler, Alemán’s novel contains mystery, horror, humor, absurdity, and political commentary . . . A concoction of political thriller and absurdist literary mystery that never fails to entertain.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Oakland’s own Dick Cluster is a writer, editor and translator. He is the translator of Poso Wells and was instrumental in bringing it to an English reading audience. Among other work, he is the editor and translator of Kill the Ámpaya!: Best Latin American Baseball Fiction, co-author of The History of
Havana
, and author of a mystery series featuring a car mechanic turned amateur detective.
