Saturday Night Special: A “Musical” Open Mic

August 27, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm UTC+0

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” ~Plato (probably)

Music is the heartbeat of poetry and the soundtrack to prose, integral to word’s performance. This month at SNS, we invite you to be inspired by our “musical” theme–in content or form. Write a story about music, sing us a song, share your most musical poetry!

Writers who are also musicians, this one’s for you!

As always, we’d love to hear your (three-minute) poems, stories, comedic sketches, songs, or dances on our optional theme (or any topic).

Our awesome August features are: Natasha Dennerstein & G Macias Gusman (and some surprise musical guests!)

First come first served. Sign-up starts at 7pm and closes when it fills up or when the reading starts, so get there early if you want to read! (Note: Sometimes the list is full by 7:03pm)

Each reader will have 3 minutes maximum. For prose writers this is about one and a half double-spaced pages.

PLEASE NOTE: We are strict about the 3 minute max. When you reach your time limit at SNS, we turn on the disco lights! So, please plan ahead. Practice your piece out loud. Time yourself. Dance!

After the reading, stick around for karaoke starting at 10pm

BIOS

NATASHA DENNERSTEIN was born in Melbourne, Australia, to a family originating in Belarus. She worked as a psychiatric nurse for 20 years, which gave her an interesting perspective on the human condition. She has an MFA from San Francisco State University. Natasha has had poetry published in Fourth Floor, Landfall, Snorkel, JAAM, Takahe, Shenandoah, Bloom, Transfer, Red Light Lit, Spoon River Poetry Review, Foglifter and sPARLKE + bLINK. Her collection “Anatomize” was published by Norfolk Press in San Francisco in October, 2015 and her new collection “Triptych Caliform” is forthcoming from the same press this September.

G MACIAS GUSMAN is a gorilliarean poet raging from a Mid-Western concrete jungle nestled along the banks of Old Man River. His works have been described as “gritty, raw, a new beat.” He has a willingness to live out in the open with his heart on his sleeve, breaking all the unknown rules. Gusman’s first poem was recently published by The Borfski Press, and his first chapbook is in search of a home. Gusman has featured at Beast Crawl, Bay Area Generations, Passages on the Lake; and now Saturday Night Special.
