She is also the author of a memoir\, a book about writing\, two children’s books\, and numerous articles and short stories. Her work has been nominated for the National Book Award\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and the International Orange Prize\, and she has won many awards including the Commonwealth Gold Award and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Achievement in American Literature. Her essays and stories are found in hundreds of anthologies and textbooks.
