SUMMARY:Michael Eric Dyson: Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America
DESCRIPTION:KPFA Radio 94.1 FM & Marcus Books present \nMICHAEL ERIC DYSON\nWhat Truth Sounds Like: RFK\, James Baldwin\, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America\nHosted by Kevin Cartwright \nEntry $20\, entry & book $35\, 2 entries & book $45\, Tickets: 800-838-3006\, or independent bookstores\, Benefit KPFA\, Info: kpfa.org/events \nMichael Eric Dyson is one of America’s premier public intellectuals. The author of last year’s outstanding bestseller\, “Tears We Cannot Stop\,” Dyson is University Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University\, a frequent contributor to the New York Times\, and an editor of The New Republic. Ebony magazine named him one of America’s 100 most influential African-Americans. In addition\, Dyson is a uniquely outstanding public speaker\, employing exceptionally deep knowledge with a talent for immediacy\, terrific wit\, and an extraordinarily rich voice. \nHis new book\, What Truth Sounds Like deftly explores the tense intersection of the conflict between politics and prophecy- of whether we embrace political resolution or moral redemption to fix our fractured landscape. Dr. Dyson examines key players today\, from Jay-Z to Jordan Peele and LeBron James\, from Ta-Nehisi Coates to Kamala Harris. He ends with a paean to Wakanda\, the all too mythical nation celebrated in the film “Black Panther”. “If James Baldwin and his glorious crew could gather again\, they could hardly have a better place to reconvene and let the beautiful momentum of blackness wash over them as they sought to make America truly great. For the first time.” \nWhat Truth Sounds Like reveals how every big argument about race that persists to this day got a hearing in a crucial meeting convened in 1963 when Robert F. Kennedy invited James Baldwin and a few of his friends to discuss Black America’s rage: disdain for black dissent\, the belief that black folk wallow in the politics of ingratitude and victimhood\, and that they lack hustle and ingenuity.

SUMMARY:Tommy Orange presents his debut novel\, THERE THERE (w/ R.O. Kwon)
DESCRIPTION:EAST BAY BOOKSELLERS is very excited to welcome Tommy Orange to discuss his jaw-droppingly good debut novel\,There There on Friday\, June 15th at 7pm. Tommy will be in conversation with R. O. Kwon. \n“We all came to the powwow for different reasons. The messy\, dangling threads of our lives got pulled into a braid–tied to the back of everything we’d been doing all along to get us here. There will be death and playing dead\, there will be screams and unbearable silences\, forever-silences\, and a kind of time-travel\, at the moment the gunshots start\, when we look around and see ourselves as we are\, in our regalia\, and something in our blood will recoil then boil hot enough to burn through time and place and memory. We’ll go back to where we came from\, when we were people running from bullets at the end of that old world. The tragedy of it all will be unspeakable\, that we’ve been fighting for decades to be recognized as a present-tense people\, modern and relevant\, only to die in the grass wearing feathers.” \nJacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame in Oakland. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life together after his uncle’s death and has come to work the powwow and to honor his uncle’s memory. Edwin Black has come to find his true father. Thomas Frank has come to drum the Grand Entry. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil Red Feather; Orvil has taught himself Indian dance through YouTube videos\, and he has come to the Big Oakland Powwow to dance in public for the very first time. Tony Loneman is a young Native American boy whose future seems destined to be as bleak as his past\, and he has come to the Powwow with darker intentions–intentions that will destroy the lives of everyone in his path. \nFierce\, angry\, funny\, groundbreaking–Tommy Orange’s first novel is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seen. There There is a multi-generational\, relentlessly paced story about violence and recovery\, hope and loss\, identity and power\, dislocation and communion\, and the beauty and despair woven into the history of a nation and its people. A glorious\, unforgettable debut. \n* * * \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nTommy Orange is a recent graduate from the MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts. He is a 2014 MacDowell Fellow\, and a 2016 Writing by Writers Fellow. He is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. He was born and raised in Oakland\, California\, and currently lives in Angels Camp\, California. \nR. O. Kwon is a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow. She has received awards from Yaddo\, MacDowell\, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, Omi International\, the Steinbeck Center\, and the Norman Mailer Writers’ Colony. SUMMARY:Lauren Groff discusses and signs FLORIDA
DESCRIPTION:Lauren Groff discusses and signs FLORIDA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, June 16\, 7:30 pm\nPegasus Books Downtown \nCelebrated New York Times bestselling author Lauren Groff presents her highly anticipated new collection of short stories\, Florida. \n \nABOUT FLORIDA \nIn her vigorous and moving new book\, Lauren Groff brings her electric storytelling and intelligence to a world in which storms\, snakes\, and sinkholes lurk at the edge of everyday life\, but the greater threats and mysteries are of a human\, emotional\, and psychological nature. Among those navigating it all are a resourceful pair of abandoned sisters; a lonely boy\, grown up; a restless\, childless couple\, a searching\, homeless woman; and an unforgettable\, recurring character – a steely and conflicted wife and mother. \nThe stories in this collection span characters\, towns\, decades\, even centuries\, but Florida — its landscape\, climate\, history\, and state of mind — becomes its gravitational center: an energy\, a mood\, as much as a place of residence. Groff transports the reader\, then jolts us alert with a crackle of wit\, a wave of sadness\, a flash of cruelty\, as she writes about loneliness\, rage\, family\, and the passage of time. With shocking accuracy and effect\, she pinpoints the moments and decisions and connections behind human pleasure and pain\, hope and despair\, love and fury — the moments that make us alive. Startling\, precise\, and affecting\, Florida is a magnificent achievement. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nLauren Groff is the New York Times bestselling author of three novels\, The Monsters of Templeton\, Arcadia\, and Fates and Furies\, and the celebrated short story collection Delicate Edible Birds. Her work has been featured in the New Yorker\, Harper’s\, the Atlantic\, and several Best American Short Stories anthologies. She has won the Paul Bowles Prize for Fiction\, the PEN/O. Henry Award\, and the Pushcart Prize; and has been a finalist for the National Book Award\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Orange Award for New Writers\, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. \n\n\n\n\nEvent date:\n\nSaturday\, June 16\, 2018 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\nEvent address:\n\n\n\nPegasus Books Downtown\n2349 Shattuck Ave\n\nBerkeley\, CA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlorida (Hardcover)\n\nBy Lauren Groff\n$27.00\nISBN: 9781594634512\nAvailability: Coming Soon – Available for Pre-Order Now\nPublished: Riverhead Books – June 5th\, 2018

SUMMARY:TELEGRAPH OPEN MIC (FEATURES: DAPHNE GOTTLIEB AND SAGE CURTIS)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 23rd and Telegraph in Oakland for a six-slot open mic alongside two amazing features. This month’s show features Daphne Gottlieb and Sage Curtis! \nMusic by TBA. \nTelegraph Open Mic takes place every fourth Friday from 7-9:00 PM at our Uptown location. It will have six open-mic slots open to the public. Spots are filled on a first-come\, first-serve basis and the list opens at 7:00 PM sharp. As is the case with our musicians and features at all events\, open-mic readers from the community will be held to the Nomadic Press Safe Space Statement. Please see below. \nSafe Space Statement \nNomadic Press events are safe spaces for those who have been silenced and marginalized. There is no room for racism\, misogyny\, homophobia\, or transphobia whether in the content of one’s reading or in one’s interactions with members of the community. We will protect the safety of this space by revoking a reader’s access to the microphone if we feel they have violated these guidelines\, and we encourage community members to come to us if someone has violated these guidelines away from the microphone. We are a community\, and we will work together to ensure that the safety of our most vulnerable members is prioritized above all else. \nCome early to sign up for the open mic and share your latest work! Curated and emceed by Rene Vaz. \nTo help pay for our space and our artists and ensure that we can continue our robust programming series\, we are calling for $10 at the door (plus whatever else you may be able to give)\, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Nomadic Press books\, as always\, will be for sale at the event. \nWine and Red Bay coffee will be available.

SUMMARY:Berkeley Arts & Letters presents Porochista Khakpour / Sick: A Memoir / with Achy Obejas
DESCRIPTION:June 26\, 2018\, 7:30pm\nHillside Club\, 2286 Cedar St.\, Berkeley\nTickets available now! \nFor as long as writer Porochista Khakpour can remember\, she has been sick. For most of that time\, she didn’t know why.  All of her trips to the ER and her daily pain and lethargy only ever resulted in one question: How could any one person be this sick? Several drug addictions\, three major hospitalizations\, and over $100\,000 later\, she finally had a diagnosis: late-stage Lyme disease. In the tradition of Brain on Fire and Darkness Visible\, an honest\, beautifully rendered memoir of chronic illness\, misdiagnosis\, addiction\, and the myth of full recovery. SICK is a candid\, illuminating narrative of hope and uncertainty\, boldly examining the deep impact of illness on one woman’s life. \n Porochista Khakpour’s debut novel Sons and Other Flammable Objects was a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, one of the Chicago Tribune’s Fall’s Best\, and the 2007 California Book Award winner in the “First Fiction” category. Her second novel The Last Illusion was a 2014 “Best Book of the Year” according to NPR\, Kirkus\, Buzzfeed\, Popmatters\, Electric Literature\, and many more.  Among her many fellowships is a National Endowment for the Arts award. Her nonfiction has appeared in many sections of The New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, Elle\, Slate\, Salon\, and Bookforum\, among many others. Currently\, she is guest faculty at VCFA and Stonecoast’s MFA programs as well as Contributing Editor at The Evergreen Review. Born in Tehran and raised in the Los Angeles area\, she lives in New York City’s Harlem. Her author photo was taken by Sylvie Roskoff. \nPlease note: \nConversation to be followed by a Q&A and signing. \nThis event is all ages. Accessibility is important to us! SUMMARY:DON MIGUEL RUIZ presents THE THREE QUESTIONS: How to Discover and Master the Power Within You In conversation with co-author Barbara Emrys
DESCRIPTION:The beloved spiritual teacher builds on the message of his enduring New York Times and international bestseller The Four Agreements with this profound guide that takes us deeper into the tradition of Toltec wisdom\, helping us find and use the hidden power within us to achieve our fullest lives. \nIn The Four Agreements\, Don Miguel Ruiz introduced seekers on the path to enlightenment to the tenets of Mesoamerican spiritual culture — the ancient Toltec. Now\, he takes us deeper into Native American practice\, and asks us to consider essential questions that drive our lives and govern our spiritual power. Three eternal questions can help us into our power and use it judiciously: \n>  Who am I?\n>  What is real?\n>  How do I express love? \nAt each stage in our lives\, we must ask these simple yet deeply profound questions. Finding the answers will open the door to the next stage in our development\, and eventually lead us to our complete\, truest selves. But as Don Miguel Ruiz makes clear\, we suffer if we do not ask these questions — or if we fail to pay attention to their answers — because we either never act on our power or use it destructively. Only when power is anchored in our identity and in reality will it be able to be in synch with the universe — and be of true benefit to ourselves and to others. \nThe three questions provide a practical framework that allows readers to engage with Ruizs transformative message and act as a vehicle for overcoming fear and anxiety and discovering peace of mind. An essential guide for all travelers pursuing self-knowledge\, understanding\, and acceptance\, The Three Questions is the next step in our unique spiritual metamorphosis. \n—\nDon Miguel Ruiz is an international bestselling author\, and has dedicated his life to sharing the wisdom of the ancient Toltec through his books\, lectures and journeys to sacred sites around the world. \nBarbara Emrys is a spiritual teacher and the author of The Red Clay of Burundi: Finding God\, the Music\, and Me. \nPlease note: \nEach ticket includes one copy of The Three Questions. Don Miguel will pre-sign the books. \nConversation to be followed by a Q&A. Additional details coming soon. \nThis event is all ages. Accessibility is important to us! If you have special needs of any kind\, please write events AT booksmith DOT com and we will do our best to accommodate you.

SUMMARY:AMBER TAMBLYN presents ANY MAN
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 5\, 2018\, 7:30pm\nHillside Club\, 2286 Cedar St.\, Berkeley\nTickets available soon! \nIn her electric and provocative debut novel Any Man\, Amber Tamblyn blends genres of poetry\, prose\, and elements of suspense to give shape to the shocking narratives of victims of sexual violence\, mapping the destructive ways in which our society perpetuates rape culture. \nA violent serial rapist is on the loose\, who goes by the name Maude. She hunts for men at bars\, online\, at home — the place doesn’t matter\, neither does the man. Her victims then must live the aftermath of their assault in the form of doubt from the police\, feelings of shame and alienation from their friends and family\, and the haunting of a horrible woman who becomes the phantom on which society projects its greatest fears\, fascinations\, and misogyny. All the while the police are without leads and the media hound the victims\, publicly dissecting the details of their attack. \nWhat is extraordinary is how as years pass these men learn to heal\, by banding together and finding a space to raise their voices. Told in alternating viewpoints signature to each voice and experience of the victim\, these pages crackle with emotion\, ranging from horror to breathtaking empathy. \nAs bold as it is timely\, Any Man paints a searing portrait of survival and is a tribute to those who have lived through the nightmare of sexual assault. \n— \nAmber Tamblyn\, author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Dark Sparkler\, has been nominated for Emmy\, Golden Globe\, and Independent Spirit awards. She has published two additional books of poetry\, Free Stallion (2005)\, which won the Borders Book Choice Award for Breakout Writing\, and Bang Ditto (2009)\, an IndieNext bestseller. Tamblyn reviews books of poetry for Bust Magazine\, is poet in residence at Amy Poehlers Smart Girls and is a contributing writer for The New York Times. Her work has appeared in Glamour\, Teen Vogue\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Iowa Review Poets & Writers\, PANK\, and elsewhere. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter. \nPlease note: \nQ&A and signing to follow. More information to come soon. \nThis event is all ages. Accessibility is important to us!
