She has a BFA from San Francisco State University and a Master’s in Journalism from UC Berkeley. She hated grad school\, and her first reading was about that. DESCRIPTION:Sinan Antoon (Baghdad\, 1967) is a poet\, novelist\, scholar\, and translator. He holds degrees from Baghdad\, Georgetown\, and Harvard\, where he earned a doctorate in Arabic literature. He has published two collections of poetry and four novels. His works have been translated into nine languages. His translation of Mahmoud Darwish’s last prose book In the Presence of Absence won the 2012 American Literary Translators’ Award. His translation of his own novel\, The Corpse Washer\, won the 2014 Saif Ghobash Prize for Literary Translation and was longlisted for the International Prize for Foreign Fiction. His third novel\, Ya Maryam\, was shortlisted for the Arabic Booker. His scholarly works include The Poetics of the Obscene: Ibn al-Hajjaj and Sukhf (Palgrave\, 2014). In 2003 he returned to his native Baghdad to co-direct About Baghdad\, a documentary about life under occupation. He is co-founder and co-editor of Jadaliyya. He is an associate professor at New York University.

We will celebrate the mighty power of small presses as they read from their new and forthcoming works. \nScott Esposito will be reading from his book-length personal essay\, The Surrender (Anomalous Press). Scott is a prolific writer\, interviewer\, and reviewer. In addition to his book (with Lauren Elkin)\, The End of Oulipo?\, his writings and criticsm have appeared in journals like Music & Literature and The Point\, as well as the Times Literary Supplement\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, and the Washington Post. In The Surrender\, he explores\, via a “collection of facts”\,  his lifelong desire to be a woman. It is a book that asks just what we mean when we say the word gender—what separates male from female\, and how we gain access to those things that make us feel who we truly are. \nJanice Lee will be reading from The Sky Isn’t Blue (Civil Coping Mechanisms). Janice is a writer\, artist\, editor\, designer\, curator\, and scholar. Her interests are as multi-dimensional as they are multi-disciplinary\, as she pursues the connections between the realms of technology\, consciousness studies\, the paranormal & occult\, biological anthropology\, psychology\, and literary theory. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she is Editor of the #RECURRENT Novel Series\, Assistant Editor at Fanzine\, Executive Editor at Entropy\, and Founder/CEO of POTG Design. \nKit Schluter will be reading from a manuscript in process. Kit a writer\, translator\, artist\, and bookmaker who lives in Oakland\, CA. DESCRIPTION:Genny Lim is a noted poet performer who’s collaborated with the late Max Roach and bassist\, Herbie Lewis. Lim has performed at numerous jazz festivals and venues coast to coast\, including the SF Jazz Poetry Festival and World Poetry Festivals in Venezuela\, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy. Her poetry and vocals can be heard on Asian ImprovArts recordings with her long time collaborators Francis Wong on Devotee and Child of Peace and Jon Jang on Immigrant Suite.  Her collaboration with Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra\, A Day of Infamy\, premiered in 2015 at Herbst Theater and other SF venues. Lim is also the author of the award-winning play\, Paper Angels\, the first Asian American play to be featured on PBS’s American Playhouse in 1985. The drama shed light on Chinese immigrants held on Angel Island and will be presented at the Seattle Fringe Festival in Feb and March 2016. She co-authored\, Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island and several poetry collections\, including Paper Gods and Rebels. Her upcoming collaboration\, Liminal Space\, with drummer Marshall Trammell is set to premiere at the San Francisco International Performing Arts Festival in May 2106. Lim is the subject of a feature documentary\, The Voice\, which aired on PBS in 2002; and was featured in the five-part PBS series\, The United States of Poetry\, and San Francisco Chinatown. \nJon Jang (composer\, pianist) created the idea of SenseUS –Rainbow Anthems\, a collaboration of poets and composers who collectively reimagine the National Anthem as multiple poems in anthems as opposed to a singular song. This work featured poets Genny Lim\, Sonia Sanchez and Victor Hernandez Cruz with musicians Jon Jang\, Max Roach\, John Santos and a large music ensemble that premiered at Davies Symphony Hall in 1990. Jon Jang has also performed with Amiri Baraka Transbluesency and Janice Mirikitani Shadow in Stone. Jang has recorded with Max Roach\, James Newton\, David Murray and Island: The Immigrant Suite No. 1 featuring Genny Lim and the Jon Jang Octet on Soul Note\, a recording company based in Milano\, Italy. His ensembles have toured at major concert halls and music festivals in Europe\, China\, Canada\, United States and South Africa\, four months after the election in April 1994 to end apartheid. During 1999-2001\, Jang toured with Max Roach as part of the Beijing Trio at the Library of Congress in Washington DC\, Chicago\, San Francisco\, Boston\, Zurich\, Berlin\, Milan and the Royal Festival Hall in London. As a scholar\, Jang has taught at Stanford University\, University of California at Berkeley and UC Irvine. In 2012\, Jon Jang was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr.-Cesar Chavez-Rosa Parks Visiting Professor recognition at the University of Michigan.

She received an MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA in religious studies from NYU. Currently\, Brynn lives in the Bay Area and teaches in San Francisco. \nPercival Everett is the author of fourteen novels and three collections of short fiction including re:f(gesture)\, published by Red Hen Press. He is the recipient of the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, the PEN/Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature (for his 1996 story collection Big Picture) and a New American Writing Award (for his 1990 novel Zulus). His stories have been included in the Pushcart Prize anthology and Best American Short Stories. He has served as a judge for\, among others\, the 1997 National Book Award for fiction and the PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1991. He teaches fiction writing\, American studies\, and critical theory\, and he has taught at Bennington College\, the University of Wyoming\, and the University of California at Riverside. He is currently at the University of Southern California. He has worked as a musician\, a ranch hand\, and a high school teacher. \nMaxine Hong Kingston is the aclaimed author of three novels and several works of non-fiction about the experiences of Chinese immigrants living in the United States. She is the author most recently of the braided nonfiction narrative Reclaimers\, stories of people reclaiming sacred land and water\, as well as the memoir/history Test Ride on the Sunnyland Bus: A Daughter’s Civil Rights Journey\, winner of the River Teeth literary nonfiction prize\, and two collections of essays\, Potluck: Community on the Edge of Wilderness\, finalist for the Washington State Book Award\, and Now Go Home\, a Seattle Times Best Book of 2004. Her writing on nature\, work\, civil rights\, and life in a small community has appeared in dozens of publications including Orion\, Ecotone\, Creative Nonfiction\, North American Review\, and High Country News. \nSarah Van Arsdale’s fourth book of fiction\, In Case of Emergency\, is just out with Queen’s Ferry Press\, April\, 2012. Her third novel\, Grand Isle\, was published by SUNY Press in 2012. Her second\, Blue\, winner of the 2002 Peter Taylor Prize for the Novel\, was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2003\, and her first\, Toward Amnesia\, was published in 1996 by Riverhead Books. Her poetry\, book reviews\, interviews and essays have appeared in national publications\, including Guernica\, Passages North\, Fiction Writers Review\, Bookslut\, Episodic\, and Oxford Magazine. She holds an MFA in Poetry from Vermont College\, and teaches at the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts MFA in Creative Writing Program and at NYU.
