These movies left an indelible mark on America\, and\, probably\, your psyche. \nKevin Smokler attended Goonies Day in Astoria\, Oregon\, took a Lost Boys tour of Santa Cruz\, California\, and visited retro arcades\, movie theaters\, record stores\, and the Dirty Dancing resort in Lake Lure\, NC. He interviewed actors\, writers\, and directors. Mostly\, he did what he does best\, which is to add his keen and witty commentary to the conversation about American Culture and the things that bring us together. \nKevin Smokler is the author of the essay collection Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books you Haven’t Touched Since High School (2013) which the Atlantic Wire called “truly enjoyable” and the editor of Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times\, A San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book of 2005. His writing on pop culture has appeared in the LA Times\, Salon\, BuzzFeed\, Vulture\, the San Francisco Chronicle and on NPR. In 2013\, he was BookRiot’s first ever Writer in Residence. \nHe can be found on twitter at @weegee. He lives in San Francisco with his wife\, cat and most of MTV’s first year on vinyl.
