SUMMARY:BINDERY: Porochista Khakpour / Sick
DESCRIPTION:Booksmith hosts an evening with the author of Sons and Other Flammable Objects and The Last Illusion\, Porochista Khakpour for her new book Sick: A Memoir. Porochista will be in conversation with Esmé Weijun Wang (The Border of Paradise). Please join us! \n  \nFor as long as writer Porochista Khakpour can remember\, she has been sick. For most of that time\, she didn’t know why. All of her trips to the ER and her daily pain and lethargy only ever resulted in one question: How could any one person be this sick? Several drug addictions\, three major hospitalizations\, and over $100\,000 later\, she finally had a diagnosis: late-stage Lyme disease. In the tradition of Brain on Fire and Darkness Visible\, an honest\, beautifully rendered memoir of chronic illness\, misdiagnosis\, addiction\, and the myth of full recovery. Sick is a candid\, illuminating narrative of hope and uncertainty\, boldly examining the deep impact of illness on one woman’s life. \n  \n\nPorochista Khakpour’s debut novel Sons and Other Flammable Objects was a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, one of the Chicago Tribune’s Fall’s Best\, and the 2007 California Book Award winner in the “First Fiction” category. Her second novel The Last Illusion was a 2014 “Best Book of the Year” according to NPR\, Kirkus\, Buzzfeed\, Popmatters\, Electric Literature\, and many more.  Among her many fellowships is a National Endowment for the Arts award. Her nonfiction has appeared in many sections of The New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, Elle\, Slate\, Salon\, and Bookforum\, among many others. Currently\, she is guest faculty at VCFA and Stonecoast’s MFA programs as well as Contributing Editor at The Evergreen Review. Born in Tehran and raised in the Los Angeles area\, she lives in New York City’s Harlem. Her author photo was taken by Sylvie Roskoff. \n  \nEsmé Weijun Wang is a novelist and essayist. Her debut novel\, The Border of Paradise\, was called a Best Book of 2016 by NPR and one of the 25 Best Novels of 2016 by Electric Literature. She was named by Granta as one of the “Best of Young American Novelists” in 2017\, and is the recipient of the Graywolf Nonfiction Prize for her forthcoming essay collection\, The Collected Schizophrenias. Born in the Midwest to Taiwanese parents\, she lives in San Francisco\, and can be found at esmewang.com and on Twitter @esmewang. \n  \n\nPlease note: This event is free and all ages\, and will be at The Bindery\, 1727 Haight. \n  \nDoors and bar open at 7. SUMMARY:LONG SHOT & WORKS BY DANNY SHOT
DESCRIPTION:appearing with Jack Hirschman and Jessica Loos \nWorks honors the longtime Long Shot magazine\, credo of “Writing from the Real World.” This collection of poems traverses a course from the swamps of New Jersey to the endless possibilities of the open road\, with rest stops along the way to visit with family ghosts\, highlight striking moments encountered during a 30-plus year career as a New York City public high school teacher\, and report upon the twilight years of the Beat Generation. Shot’s engaging poetry is raw\, from the gut\, deceptively rich\, and humane in the face of an increasingly post-humanistic world. \n\nDanny Shot was a longtime publisher and editor of Long Shot arts and literary magazine\, which he founded along with Eliot Katz in 1982 in New Brunswick\, New Jersey. Born in the Bronx and raised in Dumont\, New Jersey\, by German Jewish refugees\, Danny graduated Rutgers College in 1980 with a B.A. in English. Shot’s poetry has appeared in bum rush the page (Def Poetry Jam)\, Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe (Henry Holt)\, and The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry (Thunder’s Mouth) among other anthologies and numerous journals. Shot has read his poetry throughout the United States and appeared on television (WNBC\, New York) as part of Felipe Luciano’s Wordchestra. He has spent over 30 years as a NYC public high school teacher\, serving in the South Bronx\, Harlem\, and Brooklyn. Mr. Shot lives in Hoboken (home of Frank Sinatra and baseball) where he is the poet-in-residence of the Hoboken Historical Museum.

SUMMARY:BINDERY: Amber Tamblyn / Any Man
DESCRIPTION:In her electric and provocative debut novel Any Man\, Amber Tamblyn blends genres of poetry\, prose\, and elements of suspense to give shape to the shocking narratives of victims of sexual violence\, mapping the destructive ways in which our society perpetuates rape culture. \nA violent serial rapist is on the loose\, who goes by the name Maude. She hunts for men at bars\, online\, at home — the place doesn’t matter\, neither does the man. Her victims then must live the aftermath of their assault in the form of doubt from the police\, feelings of shame and alienation from their friends and family\, and the haunting of a horrible woman who becomes the phantom on which society projects its greatest fears\, fascinations\, and misogyny. All the while the police are without leads and the media hound the victims\, publicly dissecting the details of their attack. \nWhat is extraordinary is how as years pass these men learn to heal\, by banding together and finding a space to raise their voices. Told in alternating viewpoints signature to each voice and experience of the victim\, these pages crackle with emotion\, ranging from horror to breathtaking empathy. \nAs bold as it is timely\, Any Man paints a searing portrait of survival and is a tribute to those who have lived through the nightmare of sexual assault. \n\nAmber Tamblyn\, author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Dark Sparkler\, has been nominated for Emmy\, Golden Globe\, and Independent Spirit awards. She has published two additional books of poetry\, Free Stallion(2005)\, which won the Borders Book Choice Award for Breakout Writing\, andBang Ditto (2009)\, an IndieNext bestseller. Tamblyn reviews books of poetry for Bust Magazine\, is poet in residence at Amy Poehlers Smart Girls and is a contributing writer for The New York Times. Her work has appeared in Glamour\, Teen Vogue\,the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Iowa Review\, Poets & Writers\, PANK\, and elsewhere. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter. \n  \nPlease note: this event will be held at The Bindery\, 1727 Haight. \n  \nBar opens at 7\, event begins at 7:30pm. \n  \nRSVP appreciated but not required.

SUMMARY:Adrienne Eberhardt / closing reception for Emotional Science
DESCRIPTION:The Bindery hosts a closing for Adrienne Eberhardt‘s exhibition Emotional Science \nEmotional Science presents experimental and analog work Adrienne made as a teenager in her makeshift darkroom in St. Louis\, Missouri. She will also be displaying a more recent series of self portraits entitled “Closer Still.” \n  \nArtist statement: The long\, isolating gray winters growing up in Missouri were always a highly creative period for me. I spent so many days inside my darkroom\, listening to music\, looking at negatives and experimenting with image making. I was intrigued by the concept of photography: that light enabled an image to reflect off a mirror and record time. Many of the images I made represent 1-2 hour exposures of me literately standing in the dark with my enlarger dodging and burning parts of an image in to see what I could pull from it. \n  \nAdrienne’s technique may be described as a subtle interplay of the intentional and the accidental\, which in turn reflects the cycle of disorder and reconstruction that characterize memory and life experience. By playing with light and texture\, she allows the medium and method to interpret her subjects\, often distorting individual features and rendering spaces ambiguous. The emotions explored have no definable shape and cannot be limited to the experience of one person; rather the purpose and process of her work is to remove forced definitions and expected categories to create an experience that is simultaneously recognizable and universal. \n  \nHer more recent body of work entitled “Closer Still” is a series of self portraits and represents two important firsts: using herself as a subject\, and working in a digital medium. She painted exposed photographic paper and allowed the water and paint to dry in puddles\, again letting time and randomness play a role in the formulation of the texture and final image. In “An Unusual Appearance of Light” the figure interacts with her environment by surfacing with clarity\, arms raised up in a possible combination of surrender\, exhibition\, and confrontation. The figure appears to invite the viewer into a direct and mutual transmission of thought and feeling\, and the distinct light surrounding the subject in this moment gives clues about what is before her. As with all of Adrienne’s work the exchange between subject and viewer is left ambiguous\, inviting the viewer to explore the concept behind the process and his or her own possibilities of seeing. \n  \nAdrienne\, the Creative Director of her own multi-disciplinary design studio based in San Francisco\, will be on hand with originals and limited edition prints for sale\, and a cash bar will be open from 6 – 9pm. \n  \nPlease note: this event will be at The Bindery at 1727 Haight. RSVP appreciated but not required.

SUMMARY:LaborFest 2018 Immigrant Girl\, Radical Woman\, a Memoir from the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Robbin Henderson\, Matilda Rabinowitz’s memoir challenges assumptions about the lives of early twentieth-century women. In Immigrant Girl\, Radical Woman\, Rabinowitz describes the ways in which she and her contemporaries rejected the intellectual and social restrictions imposed on women as they sought political and economic equality in the first half of the twentieth century. Rabinowitz devoted herself to the notion that women should be entitled to independence\, equal rights\, equal pay\, and sexual and personal autonomy. After immigrating from the Ukraine to the US\, she was radicalized by her experience in sweatshops and became an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World from 1912 to 1917 before choosing single motherhood in 1918.

SUMMARY:Launch for Katrina McHugh / Pop Charts (with live music by Laura Weinbach)
DESCRIPTION:The Bindery hosts an evening of art\, design and music as we celebrate the launch of Pop Charts: 100 Iconic Song Lyrics Visualized a collection of art prints by local artist and authorKatrina McHugh\, paired with a live music performance byLaura Weinbach of Foxtails Brigade. Please join us! \n  \nPlease note: this is a ticketed event — advance tickets are available at a discount. \n  \n  \nTest your musical knowledge with this fun compilation\, filled with 100 beautifully designed infographics\, that pays homage to the songs we can’t get out of our heads — inspired by lyrics from artists such as Madonna\, Fleetwood Mac\, Paul Simon\, Prince\, TLC\, Bob Dylan\, Weezer\, and more. \n  \nThroughout our lives\, a vast catalog of random popular song lyrics swirls around in our collective subconscious\, a hodgepodge language of inconsistent metaphors and cultural references tying us together. In Pop Charts: 100 Iconic Song Lyrics Visualized\, artist Katrina McHugh presents a visual exploration of 100 songs we can’t get out of our heads — from David Bowie’s Space Oddity to the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage and Beyoncé’s Run the World. Playful and poetic\, the lyrics are dissected and diagrammed in a way that allows us to see old favorites in a new light. This book is for those who enjoy testing their obscure lyric knowledge. Song name and artist can be found on the back of each page. \n  \n\n  \nKatrina McHugh is a local artist\, creative director and co-founder of the female-led branding and strategy studio\, Flight Design Co. She graduated from University of California\, Santa Barbara where she majored in Creative Studies with an emphasis in Book Arts. She lives and works in San Francisco where she consistently tries to push herself out of her comfort zone (most recently with very humble attempts at salsa dancing). She wore an eye-patch as a child and enjoys moderate length walks on Ocean Beach with her tiny terrier\, Francine. \n  \nThe Hollywood Hills-born daughter of a horror filmmaker and sister of a cult comedian\, Laura Weinbach grew up in a household that embraced eccentricity. Her next-door neighbors were circus contortionists with emus and fang-toothed monkeys as pets and her childhood activities included snail hunting and spying on celebrity neighbors like Slash\, Ice-T\, and Larry from Perfect Strangers. Front-girl for Foxtails Brigade\, a local Bay Area band\, she is known for her trademark voice\, classical guitar intricacies\, and lyrical imagery. Laura will be performing solo at this event. \n  \n\n  \nRSVP appreciated by not required. \n  \nBar opens at 6:30\, event begins at 7pm.

SUMMARY:Picture Book Surgery!
DESCRIPTION:What makes a great picture book? Let’s find out together! We’ll dissect our favorite picture books\, focusing each month on a different angle. We’ll go on a book hunt through the bookstore\, and then finish up with some time to write down or sketch about what we’ve discovered. \n  \nIllustrators Charlotte Cheng and Diana Toledano lead this workshop/book club where all participants come to learn from each other. \n  \nThis is the perfect event for author/illustrators looking forward to meet some colleagues\, discover new books\, and learn more about the craft. Authors interested in illustration\, and illustrators interested in writing are also welcome. \n  \nThis Month’s Topic is: The Role of Grown-Ups in Picture Book Stories. \n  \n\n  \nThings to Note: \n\nFeel free to bring a book from your personal collection\, but remember\, a good surgeon doesn’t have a relationship with the patient. In other words\, please do not bring your own work to discuss.\nThe people at the Booksmith are super kind letting us host our meetings there\, but they won’t be giving us any special treatment… You can politely ask them to carry your books or host your author event\, just be aware that the answer might be “no”.\n\n\nSpace is limited\, so sign up soon!\n\n  \n\n  \nThis is a monthly SCBWI Member-Hosted Event. \nTo get in touch or to join our mailing list please write us at: picturebooksurgery@gmail.com

And we will hug you when we have to stop you [just to make it easier on you (or harder – depending on your propensity for intimacy)]. \nPoetry\, prose\, music\, dancing\, comedy\, drama\, happy\, sad\, & on & on & on… Remember: EVERYTHING GOES… so do whatever you want. \nYou don’t have to perform anything; the audience is as essential as the performers. \nPlease don’t perform anything with a setup that takes much more time than the time it takes for you to walk onstage. Honestly\, plugging things in is endlessly boring. If you need to borrow an instrument\, figure it out before you’re called to the stage. \nIMPORTANT ::: DON’T TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY. Come and have fun. The end. Remember. Someday\, we won’t exist and neither will the English language. If you choose to take yourself seriously\, then take yourself so seriously that it’s stupid. Ridiculousness is encouraged. \nYou’re Going to Die. No. Really. You are.
