SUMMARY:Adrienne Eberhardt / closing reception for Emotional Science
DESCRIPTION:The Bindery hosts a closing for Adrienne Eberhardt‘s exhibition Emotional Science \nEmotional Science presents experimental and analog work Adrienne made as a teenager in her makeshift darkroom in St. Louis\, Missouri. She will also be displaying a more recent series of self portraits entitled “Closer Still.” \n  \nArtist statement: The long\, isolating gray winters growing up in Missouri were always a highly creative period for me. I spent so many days inside my darkroom\, listening to music\, looking at negatives and experimenting with image making. I was intrigued by the concept of photography: that light enabled an image to reflect off a mirror and record time. Many of the images I made represent 1-2 hour exposures of me literately standing in the dark with my enlarger dodging and burning parts of an image in to see what I could pull from it. \n  \nAdrienne’s technique may be described as a subtle interplay of the intentional and the accidental\, which in turn reflects the cycle of disorder and reconstruction that characterize memory and life experience. By playing with light and texture\, she allows the medium and method to interpret her subjects\, often distorting individual features and rendering spaces ambiguous. The emotions explored have no definable shape and cannot be limited to the experience of one person; rather the purpose and process of her work is to remove forced definitions and expected categories to create an experience that is simultaneously recognizable and universal. \n  \nHer more recent body of work entitled “Closer Still” is a series of self portraits and represents two important firsts: using herself as a subject\, and working in a digital medium. She painted exposed photographic paper and allowed the water and paint to dry in puddles\, again letting time and randomness play a role in the formulation of the texture and final image. In “An Unusual Appearance of Light” the figure interacts with her environment by surfacing with clarity\, arms raised up in a possible combination of surrender\, exhibition\, and confrontation. The figure appears to invite the viewer into a direct and mutual transmission of thought and feeling\, and the distinct light surrounding the subject in this moment gives clues about what is before her. As with all of Adrienne’s work the exchange between subject and viewer is left ambiguous\, inviting the viewer to explore the concept behind the process and his or her own possibilities of seeing. \n  \nAdrienne\, the Creative Director of her own multi-disciplinary design studio based in San Francisco\, will be on hand with originals and limited edition prints for sale\, and a cash bar will be open from 6 – 9pm. \n  \nPlease note: this event will be at The Bindery at 1727 Haight. RSVP appreciated but not required.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Robbin Henderson\, Matilda Rabinowitz’s memoir challenges assumptions about the lives of early twentieth-century women. In Immigrant Girl\, Radical Woman\, Rabinowitz describes the ways in which she and her contemporaries rejected the intellectual and social restrictions imposed on women as they sought political and economic equality in the first half of the twentieth century. Rabinowitz devoted herself to the notion that women should be entitled to independence\, equal rights\, equal pay\, and sexual and personal autonomy. After immigrating from the Ukraine to the US\, she was radicalized by her experience in sweatshops and became an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World from 1912 to 1917 before choosing single motherhood in 1918.

In Pop Charts: 100 Iconic Song Lyrics Visualized\, artist Katrina McHugh presents a visual exploration of 100 songs we can’t get out of our heads — from David Bowie’s Space Oddity to the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage and Beyoncé’s Run the World. Playful and poetic\, the lyrics are dissected and diagrammed in a way that allows us to see old favorites in a new light. This book is for those who enjoy testing their obscure lyric knowledge. Song name and artist can be found on the back of each page. \n  \n\n  \nKatrina McHugh is a local artist\, creative director and co-founder of the female-led branding and strategy studio\, Flight Design Co. She graduated from University of California\, Santa Barbara where she majored in Creative Studies with an emphasis in Book Arts. She lives and works in San Francisco where she consistently tries to push herself out of her comfort zone (most recently with very humble attempts at salsa dancing). She wore an eye-patch as a child and enjoys moderate length walks on Ocean Beach with her tiny terrier\, Francine. \n  \nThe Hollywood Hills-born daughter of a horror filmmaker and sister of a cult comedian\, Laura Weinbach grew up in a household that embraced eccentricity. Her next-door neighbors were circus contortionists with emus and fang-toothed monkeys as pets and her childhood activities included snail hunting and spying on celebrity neighbors like Slash\, Ice-T\, and Larry from Perfect Strangers. Front-girl for Foxtails Brigade\, a local Bay Area band\, she is known for her trademark voice\, classical guitar intricacies\, and lyrical imagery. Laura will be performing solo at this event. \n  \n\n  \nRSVP appreciated by not required. \n  \nBar opens at 6:30\, event begins at 7pm.

DESCRIPTION:What makes a great picture book? Let’s find out together! We’ll dissect our favorite picture books\, focusing each month on a different angle. We’ll go on a book hunt through the bookstore\, and then finish up with some time to write down or sketch about what we’ve discovered. \n  \nIllustrators Charlotte Cheng and Diana Toledano lead this workshop/book club where all participants come to learn from each other. \n  \nThis is the perfect event for author/illustrators looking forward to meet some colleagues\, discover new books\, and learn more about the craft. Authors interested in illustration\, and illustrators interested in writing are also welcome. \n  \nThis Month’s Topic is: The Role of Grown-Ups in Picture Book Stories. \n  \n\n  \nThings to Note: \n\nFeel free to bring a book from your personal collection\, but remember\, a good surgeon doesn’t have a relationship with the patient. DESCRIPTION:Kathleen McClung is the author of two collections of poetry\, The Typists Play Monopoly (2018) and Almost the Rowboat (2013). Her poetry\, memoir\, and fiction appear widely in journals and anthologies. Recipient of the Rita Dove Poetry Award from Salem College 2012 International Literary Awards\, Kathleen was selected by Naomi Shihab Nye as the winner of the 2012 National Poetry Competition sponsored by the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Nye also honored Kathleen’s work in The MacGuffin’s 2017 National Poet Hunt. Kathleen has taught writing and literature classes at Skyline College in San Bruno\, California for over twenty years. Dawn McGuire is a neurologist and author of two poetry collections\, Sleeping in Africa and Hands On. She grew up in Eastern Kentucky and was educated at Princeton University\, Union Theological Seminary\, and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her scientific work is focused in two areas: developing biological and gene therapies for diseases such as Huntington’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis; and in reducing disparities in stroke and other neurologic conditions. Her poems have appeared in various literary magazine and anthologies\, and she has won several poetry awards\, including the Troubadour Prize (UK)\, the National League of American Pen Women\, and the 2011 Sarah Lawrence/Campbell Corner Academy of Language Exchange Poetry Prize for “poems that treat larger themes with lyric intensity.” She is Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the Neurosciences Institute of Morehouse School of Medicine\, and divides her time between Atlanta and Northern California.
