JUNE 23RD\, 4-6PM \n\n\nTRAVEL TIPS FOR THE TIMID BY CAROLYN CASSADY\n\nJoin us for an afternoon with Cathy Cassady\, eldest daughter of Neal and Carolyn Cassady\, and editor of the newly published Travel Tips for the Timid\, written and richly illustrated by Carolyn. \nFor many years\, and somewhat unbeknownst to her children until after her passing\, Carolyn Cassady remained hard at work writing and painting\, and this book is part of the trove of art and writing she left behind. Travel Tips for the Timid follows Carolyn’s journeys abroad with her children\, dispelling the kind of surprises that often catch travelers—particularly first-time travelers—by surprise. \nThis event will include readings from the book\, as well as a discussion and Q&A with Cathy about Carolyn’s exceptional life and work. \n\nCarolyn Cassady (April 28\, 1923–September 20\, 2013)\, immortalized as “Camille” in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road\, graduated from Bennington College with a degree in Drama. She moved to Denver to pursue her Masters in Theater Arts; while there\, she met and married Neal Cassady\, who became known as the inspiration for Jack Kerouac\, Allen Ginsberg\, and Ken Kesey. But Carolyn was a prolific artist in her own right. Aside from enjoying painting\, sculpting\, drafting\, block printing\, embroidery\, upholstering\, and theater arts\, she also published two memoirs\, Heart Beatand Off the Road. She was fortunate enough to be able to pursue her passion for the theater as the Artistic Director for both the San Jose Light Opera Company and the Santa Clara University Drama Department. For many years\, she designed stage sets\, costumes\, and hairstyles for the local dance school. When her three kids were grown and gone\, Carolyn moved to England\, where she lived her remaining thirty years.

Please join us! \nThe Grateful Dead rose to greatness under the inspired leadership of guitarist Jerry Garcia\, but the band very nearly died along with him. When Garcia passed away suddenly in August of 1995\, the remaining band members experienced full crises of confidence and identity. So long defined by Garcia’s vision for the group\, the surviving “Core Four\,” as they came to be called\, were reduced to conflicting agendas\, strained relationships\, and catastrophic business decisions that would leave the iconic band in shambles. Wrestling with how best to define their living legacy\, the band made many attempts at restructuring\, but it would take twenty years before relationships were mended enough for the Grateful Dead as fans remembered them to once again take the stage. \nAcclaimed music journalist and New York Times bestselling author Joel Selvin was there for much of the turmoil following Garcia’s death\, and he’ll offer a behind-the-scenes account of the ebbs and flows that occurred during the ensuing two decades. Plenty of books have been written about the rise of the Grateful Dead\, but this final chapter of the band’s history has never before been explored in detail. DESCRIPTION:Neeli Cherkovski is the author of many books of poetry\, including his most recent collection\, Elegy for My Beat Generation (Lithic Press). He was the coeditor of Anthology of L.A. Poets (with Charles Bukowski) and Cross-Strokes: Poetry between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Cherkovski also wrote biographies of Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Charles Bukowski\, as well as the critical memoir Whitman’s Wild Children (1988). He has lived in San Francisco since 1974. \nBorn and raised in Providence\, Rhode Island\, experimental poet and jazz musician Clark Coolidge has been connected to both the Language movement and the New York School. His poetry utilizes syntactical and sonic patterns to engage\, and generate\, meaning. In a 1968 poetics statement\, he noted\, “Words have a universe of qualities other than those of descriptive relation: Hardness\, Density\, Sound-Shape\, Vector-Force\, & Degrees of Transparency/Opacity.” Coolidge’s numerous collections of poetry include his Selected Poems 1962-1985.

SUMMARY:Adrienne Eberhardt / closing reception for Emotional Science
DESCRIPTION:The Bindery hosts a closing for Adrienne Eberhardt‘s exhibition Emotional Science \nEmotional Science presents experimental and analog work Adrienne made as a teenager in her makeshift darkroom in St. Louis\, Missouri. She will also be displaying a more recent series of self portraits entitled “Closer Still.” \n  \nArtist statement: The long\, isolating gray winters growing up in Missouri were always a highly creative period for me. I spent so many days inside my darkroom\, listening to music\, looking at negatives and experimenting with image making. I was intrigued by the concept of photography: that light enabled an image to reflect off a mirror and record time. Many of the images I made represent 1-2 hour exposures of me literately standing in the dark with my enlarger dodging and burning parts of an image in to see what I could pull from it. \n  \nAdrienne’s technique may be described as a subtle interplay of the intentional and the accidental\, which in turn reflects the cycle of disorder and reconstruction that characterize memory and life experience. By playing with light and texture\, she allows the medium and method to interpret her subjects\, often distorting individual features and rendering spaces ambiguous. The emotions explored have no definable shape and cannot be limited to the experience of one person; rather the purpose and process of her work is to remove forced definitions and expected categories to create an experience that is simultaneously recognizable and universal. \n  \nHer more recent body of work entitled “Closer Still” is a series of self portraits and represents two important firsts: using herself as a subject\, and working in a digital medium. She painted exposed photographic paper and allowed the water and paint to dry in puddles\, again letting time and randomness play a role in the formulation of the texture and final image. In “An Unusual Appearance of Light” the figure interacts with her environment by surfacing with clarity\, arms raised up in a possible combination of surrender\, exhibition\, and confrontation. The figure appears to invite the viewer into a direct and mutual transmission of thought and feeling\, and the distinct light surrounding the subject in this moment gives clues about what is before her. As with all of Adrienne’s work the exchange between subject and viewer is left ambiguous\, inviting the viewer to explore the concept behind the process and his or her own possibilities of seeing. \n  \nAdrienne\, the Creative Director of her own multi-disciplinary design studio based in San Francisco\, will be on hand with originals and limited edition prints for sale\, and a cash bar will be open from 6 – 9pm. \n  \nPlease note: this event will be at The Bindery at 1727 Haight. RSVP appreciated but not required.

Free admission\, tasty treats and drinks\, and summer door prizes! \nHere’s a bit about the authors:\nANDREW DEMCAK is an American poet and novelist\, the author of four poetry collections and five Young Adult novels. His books have been featured by the American Library Association\, Verse Daily\, Lambda Literary Foundation\, Best American Poetry\, and Poets and Writers. He was a finalist for the prestigious Dorset Poetry Prize\, the Gloria E. Anzaldúa Poetry Prize\, and the Louise Bogan Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence in Poetry. About his new teen horror novel\, How Do You Deal with a Dead Girl?\, Kirkus Reviews said\, “An eerily amusing horror tale that will have readers rooting for the characters.” \nLUIZA FLYNN-GOODLETT is the author of the chapbooks Unseasonable Weather (dancing girl press\, 2018) and Congress of Mud (Finishing Line Press\, 2015). SUMMARY:LaborFest 2018 Immigrant Girl\, Radical Woman\, a Memoir from the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Robbin Henderson\, Matilda Rabinowitz’s memoir challenges assumptions about the lives of early twentieth-century women. In Immigrant Girl\, Radical Woman\, Rabinowitz describes the ways in which she and her contemporaries rejected the intellectual and social restrictions imposed on women as they sought political and economic equality in the first half of the twentieth century. Rabinowitz devoted herself to the notion that women should be entitled to independence\, equal rights\, equal pay\, and sexual and personal autonomy. After immigrating from the Ukraine to the US\, she was radicalized by her experience in sweatshops and became an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World from 1912 to 1917 before choosing single motherhood in 1918.
