Mr. Chagoya will speak and autograph copies of the book. \nAliens is a timely new monograph of art and pithy texts by the eminent San Francisco artist and Stanford professor Enrique Chagoya. The 128-page book features paintings\, drawings\, lithographs\, and twelve of Chagoya’s singular codices\, with sixteen foldout pages. \nAliens explores some of the artist’s pioneering themes: “Reverse Anthropology” and “Reverse Modernism\,” and is filled with the artist’s brash\, spot-on humor. Aliens is divided in halves\, with two front covers. One half proceeds from left to right and showcases single-page works\, while the other half unfolds from right to left\, in the traditional manner of codices. Although the book is printed on heavy stock in a wide\, landscape format\, it sells for twenty-five dollars. \nChagoya’s art reminds us that we are all aliens; it speaks directly to the absurd and horrifying return to tribalism in our time\, as many lives are threatened and numerous freedoms curtailed.

To register for a seat\, click HERE. \n\n\n\nIlya Kaminsky\, a Russian Jew\, was born in Odessa (in the former Soviet Union) in 1977 and arrived to the United States in 1993\, when his family was granted asylum by the American government. He has been awarded both a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and Lannan Foundation’s Literary Fellowship. \nHis last book\, Dancing In Odessa (Tupelo Press)\, which won the Whiting Writer’s Award\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award\, the Dorset Prize\, and the Ruth Lilly Fellowship given annually by Poetry magazine. \nPoems from his new manuscript\, Deaf Republic\, were awarded Poetry magazine’s Levinson Prize and the Pushcart Prize. (Kaminsky lost his hearing at an early age.) Recently\, he was on the short-list for Neustadt International Literature Prize. His poems have been translated into numerous languages and his books have been published in many countries including Turkey\, Holland\, Russia\, France\, Mexico\, Macedonia\, Romania\, Spain and China\, where his poetry was awarded the Yinchuan International Poetry Prize. \n\n\n\nHeather Altfeld is a poet and essayist. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of learning and listening\, hosted by My Life\, My Stories and special guest\, David Romanelli! \nMy Life\, My Stories is a local non-profit that preserves the life legacies of seniors in our community. We match a volunteer with one senior\, and over the course of several months\, the senior’s memories are recorded and transcribed into memoirs. We focus on helping underserved populations in the Bay Area including minorities\, immigrants\, homeless seniors\, vets\, and LGBTQ elders. \nOur volunteers hear inspiring\, heartbreaking\, and touching stories that\, otherwise\, would be left untold and lost forever. My Life\, My Stories wants to give seniors a public platform to share their amazing memories with the young SF community in a live event. \nDavid Romanelli is on a journey to give our elders a voice and an audience\, to bring the old and the young together. His new book\, Life Lessons from the Oldest and Wisest\, is inspired by his intergenerational program\, Drinks With Your Elders. Having brought these events to cities across the US\, Romanelli brings together elders with young people to open a bottle of wine\, and talk about life. The book shares some of the best lessons and wisdom from the elders on parenting\, marriage\, loneliness\, resilience\, and how things look different through the lens of an elder\, nearing the end of life\, looking back on the past. \nTonight’s theme is resilience. You may be surprised with what you learn and how much you can relate to someone who may be decades older than you. \nCome early\, grab a drink\, meet new friends\, and learn something new! Her first book\, about her mentor who was killed on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17\, charts the course of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the life of a scientist who fought to end the outbreak. Her second book\, Debunked! dissects medical myths and pseudoscience and explores why we believe what we believe. Debunked! is released in 2019. She teaches science journalism and global health storytelling at Stanford University and is the founder of the Yasmin Scholarships. \nAbout Vanessa Huang \nBorn in Berkeley and home in diaspora from California and Taipei to Atlanta\, New York\, and Tianjin\, Vanessa Huang is a multimedia poet\, artist\, and cultural worker whose practice inherits teachings from the prison industrial complex abolition\, gender liberation\, and intersecting social justice movements. She lives in Phoenix\, Arizona where she volunteers with Mariposas Sin Fronteras and No More Deaths Phoenix.
