Davis first received national attention in 1969\, after being removed from her teaching position at UCLA for her social activism and membership to the Communist Party. In 1970\, she was placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List” on false charges\, which culminated in one of the most famous trials in recent U.S. history. During her sixteen-month incarceration\, a massive international “Free Angela Davis” campaign was organized\, leading to her acquittal in 1972. Davis is a founding member of Critical Resistance\, a national organization dedicated to dismantling the prison-industrial complex\, and the author of books including Freedom is a Constant Struggle and Women\, Race & Class. \nIbram X. Kendi is a historian and the Founding Director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. His books include The Black Campus Movement and Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America\, in which Kendi chronicles how racist ideas were developed\, disseminated and enshrined in American society\, leading us to a present state of racism that is more sophisticated and insidious than ever. Kendi’s next book\, How to Be An Antiracist\, will be published in 2019. \nJeff Chang is a journalist\, music critic\, and the author of Who We Be\, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop\, and We Gon’ Be Alright. He is the former Director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University and currently serves as Vice President of Narrative\, Arts\, and Culture at Race Forward.

These small\, seemingly ordinary mementos beautifully encapsulate the Tenderloin’s colorful\, vibrant past. Join us and travel back in time through the neighborhood’s material culture. \n— \nThis event is part of The Tenderloin Match Book: Historical Ephemera Project a multi-faceted project that also encompasses the publication of The Match Book: Vintage Matchbooks from San Francisco’s Tenderloin\, an artfully designed history book of the Tenderloin featuring the matchbooks of local businesses and cultural institutions. \nThrough the everyday act of picking up a matchbook and striking a match\, one is transported to another place and time; the past is remembered through a pedestrian interaction with a tangible object. Matchbooks are emblems of local culture: accessible\, utilitarian ephemera that functioned as the chosen form of advertising for small businesses in an era before plastic lighters and health concerns about smoking. These ritual objects exist at a fascinating intersection of material culture\, local history\, and design art; matchbooks (and other local business ephemera) are striking populist artifacts that serve as portals to places and people in a neighborhood’s past. DESCRIPTION:Criminal Justice Reform – it’s an issue that\, after years and years of advocacy\, is finally making inroads and entering the national consciousness. It’s about time. \nSome stats:\n– There are roughly 2\,000\,000 individuals in our prisons and jails\n– The US houses about a quarter of the world’s prison population\n– 77% of folks leaving state prisons return\n– In some States African Americans are 10 times more likely to go to prison than White Americans\n– Approximately 17% of trans people in the US have been incarcerated. \nWe are over imprisoning and imprisoning folks in a discriminatory manner and\, given the complex web of state\, local\, and federal oversight related to criminal justice – how can we make progress on this issue\, add the justice back in to criminal justice\, and what can the average person do? \nTo give us a lay of the land we have two expert leaders in the field – Lateefah Simon and Lenore Anderson. \nMore about them below. \nLateefah Simon – President Akonadi Foundation \nLateefah Simon joined Akonadi Foundation as President in August 2016. As a nationally recognized advocate for civil rights and racial justice\, she brings over 20 years of executive experience in advancing opportunities for communities of color and low-income communities in the Bay Area. Prior to joining Akonadi\, which seeks to eliminate structural racism that leads to inequity in the United States\, Lateefah served as Program Director for the San Francisco-based Rosenberg Foundation\, a statewide grantmaker focusing on systemic barriers to full access to equity and opportunity for Californians. Lateefah managed the Foundation’s portfolio of grants supporting groundbreaking advocacy in criminal justice reform\, immigrant rights\, low-wage workers’ rights\, and civic engagement. In 2016\, Lateefah helped launch the $2 million Leading Edge Fund\, created to seed\, incubate\, and implement bold ideas from the next generation of progressive movement leaders in California. \nBefore joining Rosenberg\, Lateefah was Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area\, where she revamped the 40-year-old organization’s structure and launched successful community-based initiatives\, including the Second Chance Legal Services Clinic. Lateefah also initiated San Francisco’s first reentry services division and spearheaded the flagship program\, Back on Track\, under the leadership of then-District Attorney Kamala D. Harris. Back on Track\, an advocacy program for young adults charged with low-level felony drug sales\, brought recidivism for the population it serves below 10 percent. Lateefah’s passion for supporting low-income young women and girls\, and her advocacy for juvenile and criminal justice reform\, began at San Francisco’s Center for Young Women’s Development (CYWD)\, now called the Young Women’s Freedom Center. Lateefah became Executive Director of that grassroots organization\, run for and by young women who come through and are affected by these systems\, at age 19; she remained in that role for 11 years. \nLateefah has received numerous awards for her work\, including the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Jefferson Award for extraordinary public service. She was named ‘Most Promising New Foundation President’ by Inside Philanthropy in 2017 and was one of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s 40 Under 40 in 2016. The California State Assembly named Lateefah Woman of the Year and she has also been recognized by the Ford Foundation\, the National Organization for Women\, Lifetime Television\, and O Magazine. In 2016\, Lateefah was elected to serve District 7 on the BART Board of Directors and was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the California State University’s Board of Trustees. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Tipping Point Community. \nWhen not working\, Lateefah spends her time enjoying Oakland’s many family-friendly spaces with her two daughters. \nLenore Anderson – President\, Alliance for Safety and Justice \nLenore is the founder and President of Alliance for Safety and Justice\, and founder and Executive Director of Californians for Safety and Justice. She is an attorney with extensive experience working to improve our criminal justice system. She is a regular commentator in the media about challenges within our prison and justice system and new approaches to smart justice. Lenore was the Campaign Chair and co-author of Proposition 47\, a California ballot initiative passed by voters in November 2014 to reduce incarceration and reallocate prison spending to mental health\, drug treatment\, K-12 programs and victim services. The initiative represents the first time in the nation voters have elected to reclassify multiple sections of the penal code to reduce incarceration and reallocate prison spending to communities. Previously\, Lenore served as Chief of Policy and Chief of the Alternative Programs Division at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office\, where she spearheaded initiatives to reduce recidivism and improve public safety. She also crafted local and state legislation to aid victims of domestic violence\, protect violent crime witnesses\, reduce elementary school truancy and reduce recidivism. Lenore also previously served as Director of Public Safety for the Oakland Mayor\, overseeing the Mayor’s violence-reduction and police recruitment initiatives\, and as Director of the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. There she oversaw $10 million in violence-prevention grants\, advised the Mayor on public safety matters\, and launched a citywide gun buy-back program\, Community Policing Task Force and Juvenile Justice Task Force. Lenore serves on the Advisory Board of the Innovations in Prosecution initiative of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She is also a cofounder and served as the inaugural Chair of the Board of the Center for Youth Wellness\, an initiative to reduce the health impacts of toxic stress on urban youth. She holds a J.D. from NYU School of Law and a B.A. from UC Berkeley\, and lives with her family in Oakland\, California.

The gathering will include a potluck and a microphone for folks to speak briefly or read a poem. \nChapter 510 & the Department of Make Believe\, a non-profit focused on youth literacy in the East Bay\, have graciously offered their space to us free of charge for this memorial. We will have a box at the door for donations to their organization\, which is doing fabulous work\, and if you can help them out with $5-10 or more\, that would be great. SUMMARY:Injustice towards Black Trans Women and the First Trans Cultural District
DESCRIPTION:This conversation will center around two topics: Injustice towards black trans women in our criminal justice system and the formation of the nation’s first transgender cultural district – the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District! \nThere is a definite energy in the air around the movement for serious criminal justice reform in the United States. In the midst of all of this energy who is being helped and who is left out? What is criminal justice reform and what are the stories and the specifics about the population affected by an unjust justice system? \nOur two experts will focus on the importance of centering incarcerated and formerly incarcerated Black trans women in the movement for criminal jusitce reform. In our own City we are seeing ongoing incarceration and displacement of black and especial black trans folks in the Tenderloin. \nExcitingly the City just formed the Compton’s Cultural District – the nations first transgener cultural distirict. We’ll learn more about the plans for the district and the role it can play in fighting injustice. \nAbout our speakers: \nJanetta Louise Johnson\, Executive Director\,\nJanetta Louise Johnson is the Executive Director at TGI Justice Project. She is a formerly incarcerated Black transgender woman and has been an activist and advocate in the transgender communities since 1997\, when she moved to San Francisco from her hometown of Tampa\, Florida. She survived three and a half years in federal prison\, and while inside she fiercely and tirelessly advocated for her rights as an incarcerated transgender person. She became politicized through her kinship with Miss Major\, her adopted trans mother\, and after her release from prison returned to her work with non-profits and social service agencies with a higher compassion for people on the inside of jails and prisons. In 2006\, she put her skills as a community organizer\, trainer and activist to work as Interim Director of TGI Justice Project\, during which she coordinated vibrant grassroots fundraisers to support the organization. In 2014\, she became the permanent Executive Director of TGIJP when Miss Major retired from the position. \nShe co-founded the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District\, the first transgender cultural district in the country\, here in San Francisco in 2016. Janetta is committed to building strategies and interventions to reduce the recidivism rate of the transgender community by providing leadership development and job opportunities to those who are currently being released from custody. She is also a fierce advocate for transgender people who are currently incarcerated\, working tirelessly to improve the lives of those currently on the inside through legislative campaigns like the Name and Dignity Act\, which enables people in held in California prisons to change their legal name and gender\, while also fighting for the abolition of prisons at large. She believes that currently and formerly incarcerated trans people without a voice will be people without hope. She will continue to struggle to instill hope and belief in a better future for every transgender person that she can reach.\nJanetta uses she/her pronouns. \nHoney Mahogany: \nA San Francisco native\, drag queen\, business owner\, and activist\, Honey Mahogany first gained international attention as a cast member on Season 5 of the reality television series RuPaul’s Drag Race. Named SF’s best drag queen & cabaret performer by the Bay Area Reporter\, Best Drag queen by SF Weekly\, and a sought after emcee across the globe\, Honey’s more recent work fuzes art with the political. Honey’s work as a drag queen & activist has earned her a commendation from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors\, Sainthood from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence\, and awards from both the Harvey Milk Democratic Club and the San Francisco Young Democrats. She is a founder of and currently serves as the district manager for the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District\, is Co-President of the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club\, a sitting member of the San Francisco Democratic Central County Committee\, a member of the San Francisco Trans Advisory Committee\, and is an owner at the Stud\, San Francisco’s oldest LGBT bar. Honey currently hosts weekly RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing parties with Sister Roma\, and a monthly QTPOC centered party where all are welcome called Black Fridays.

Her fiction chapbook Mixing Tracks (Gertrude Press\, 2009) and poetry chapbook The Underwater Hospital (Zeitgeist Press\, 2006) also won awards. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in Scholastic Magazine\, Bellevue Literary Review\, New Verse News\, November 3 Club\, Assaracus and elsewhere. Her work has been nominated three times for a Pushcart Prize.

At 8pm we will begin a night of music\, poetry\, storytelling\, and emotions-feeling. The theme is death\, grief\, loss\, and our own mortality. Whether our own deaths feel near or far away\, whether we have the privilege of coasting through life in denial of our eventual deaths and the deaths of those we love\, or whether we are face to face with it all too often – most of us have something to say about it. In a world that would rather sweep sadness\, anger\, confusion\, and grief under the rug\, we will make a space for it together. \nThroughout the night\, we will bring some special performers up to the stage\, and the rest is up to you. Bring your stories\, songs\, poems\, or just your rapt attention. The only rule is that your performance must be under 5 minutes (we will give you a warning at 4 minutes). There will be a piano\, an acoustic guitar\, and two mics for you to use if you want! If you want to perform something that requires more than 30 seconds of setup\, email me at chelsea@yg2d.com and we can figure out how to make it work w/o eating into your 5 mins. After clerking for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor\, Forman joined the Public Defender Service in Washington\, D.C.\, where for six years he represented both juveniles and adults charged with crimes. Frustrated with the lack of education and job training opportunities for his clients\, Forman founded the Maya Angelou Public Charter School\, an alternative school for previously arrested youth. Forman is a law professor at Yale University. In his Pulitzer Prize-winning book\, Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America\, Forman examines the war on crime that began in the 1970s\, why it was supported by many African American leaders\, and how it has contributed to the mass incarceration of people of color. \nLara Bazelon is an associate professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law\, where she directs the Criminal & Juvenile Justice and Racial Justice Clinics. Previously\, she worked as a deputy federal public defender and the director of a Los Angeles-based innocence project. She is the author of Rectify: The Power of Restorative Justice After Wrongful Conviction.
